The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has approved 20 stalwarts of the party to contest various positions during its National Delegates Congress scheduled for Saturday, August 22, 2020.
Three individuals have been approved for the flagbearership while 17 others have been approved for the various national positions such as National Chairman, Vice National Chairman, General Secretary, Treasurer, National Organiser, Women Organiser and Youth Organiser.
Although at the close of nominations, no candidate had filed for the position of National Treasurer, the extension of the deadline to August 3, afforded two individuals to file to contest the position.
This was announced at a press conference in Accra yesterday which was addressed by a member of the party, Mr Kwesi Pratt, on behalf of the Chairman of the Council of Elders of the CPP, Mr Felix Amoah.
For the flagbearership, former General Secretary and the 2016 presidential candidate of the party, Mr Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, will be slugging it out with four-time flag-bearer hopeful of the party, Mr Bright Oblitei Akwetey, and a newcomer, Rev. Dr Divine Ayivor.
Acting National Chairman of the party, Hajia Hamdatu Ibrahim Haruna, will seek to become a substantive Chairman but has to battle it out with Nana Oduro Kwarteng , Mr Kweku Ankrah Quansah and Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankuma.
Mr James Kwabena Bomfeh, aka Kabila, is seeking to move from Ag. General Secretary to the substantive General Secretary, a position which is also keenly being contested by a former Director of Public Affairs and External Affairs of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Nana Yaa Akyempim Jantuah.
Two individuals, Mr Moses Yirimanbo and Mr Rashid Allao are vying for the position of National Organiser while incumbent Women Organiser, Hajia Aisha Sulley Futa, is being challenged by Madam Rose Endah with Messrs Solomon Amponsah and Osei Kofi Acquah vying for the Youth Organiser position.
For the Vice Chairmanship, Messrs Onsy Kwame Nkrumah, Emmanuel Ogbojor and J.B Daniels will go unopposed for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Vice Chairmen.
Mr Amoah announced that the National Delegates Congress would not be organised at one venue as had been done previously, but would be decentralised to reduce the numbers that would meet to vote in conformity with COVID-19 health protocols.
He said it would be held simultaneously in all the 16 regions and at the national headquarters in Accra on August 22.
“The CPP is ready and poised to provide a complete alternative to the Siamese twins of the duopoly who have misruled this country since 1992 and maintained a socio-economic system which has impoverished the majority of the population,” he stated.
