The Deputy Campaign Manager of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Abdul Mustapha Hamid, says former President John Dramani Mahama and flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has an appetite to incite northerners against Akans, particularly Ashantis and Akyems.
According to him, Mr Mahama’s use of ‘Akyem Sakawa boys’ to describe some persons in the Agyapa Royalties deal was intended to create some hate for the Akyems.
He said former President Mahama deliberately uses tribal politics to woo none Akans against the Akan speaking people in Ghana and wondered what at all the Akans might have done to Mr Mahama to deserve such hate speech from him.
Dr Hamid, who is himself a norther said, whereas non Akans could become Members of Parliament (MPs) in Akan areas, Akans on the other hand could not become MPs in non-Akan communities especially in the northern regions and Volta regions.
He cited many non Akans who have become MPs in non Akans communities, saying the Akans do not hate non Akans and therefore Mr Mahama’s use of ‘Akyem Sakawa boys’ was ill intended.
Dr Hamid who was addressing a press conference by the NPP on Monday afternoon, [September 7, 2020], said if anybody deserved the term ‘Sakawa Boys’ it is Mr Mahama who after losing the 2016 elections, decided to give the country’s bauxite resources to his younger brother.
He said it took the intervention of the government that took the matter to the Supreme Court in order to get back the country’s bauxite resource from Mr Mahama’s younger brother.
He said Mr Mahama gave the bauxite to his younger brother just three months before his exit from the office.
Dr Hamid also Minister for Inner City and Zongo Development said Mr Mahama did not have anything to offer Ghanaians, hence engaging in such tribal politics.
