Ghana grabbed a needed draw away from home to secure a place in Cameroon 2021.
Kudus Mohammed scored first for the Black Stars before Parcy Atsu drew level.
The result makes Ghana one of eight teams to confirm places at the competition next year.
Ayew who missed the game has applauded his colleagues for making the job done.
The Swansea City star will however be available for the final game against São Tomé in Accra, a game which will purely be an academic exercise.
